Group Fitness Instructor

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Health and Wellness Director, the Group Fitness Instructor will assist in ensuring that the members of the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County receive the appropriate guidance in their pursuit to achieve their health and wellness goals. The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for creating a safe, innovative, and enjoyable exercise experience for our members. To achieve this environment, the Group Fitness Instructor must be able to deliver safe, fun, dynamic, cutting-edge, and effective group exercise programs, enforce all group fitness program policies and rules, maintain the cleanliness of Group Fitness spaces and equipment and ensure that the needs of all members are met through constant attention to detail.

Essential Functions

  • Deliver safe, innovative, and effective Group Fitness program(s).
  • Maintain up to date certifications while instructing at the YMCA.
  • Model all YMCA core values and regulations in and out of the Group Fitness spaces.
  • Plan routines following standards and guidelines set forth by YMCA of USA in regards to warm-up, cool down, overall class structure and music selection.
  • Leads group fitness classes following standards and guidelines set forth by YMCA of the USA.
  • Modify all fitness classes and routines to meet the varied fitness levels and physical abilities of our members.
  • Stay informed on recent trends, delivery methods, and adaptations in group fitness/wellness.
  • Maintain attendance records for classes.
  • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Obtain substitute instructor from approved sub instructor list provided if unable to attend a scheduled class to prevent unnecessary cancellations.
  • Educate members on current health and wellness issues and trends.
  • All other duties as assigned by supervisor.
 

Swim Instructor

Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Swim instructors at the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County create a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions and learning environment in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

1. Provides swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages and abilities.
2. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
3. Helps to create new approaches to serve the needs of program participants.
4. Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensures consistency with evidence-based practices.
5. Maintains constant supervision of students, identifies students who need assistance, and supports students as necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.
6. Attends all staff meetings and trainings as required.
7. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
8. Maintains positive relationships with parents and caregivers and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.

 

Youth Sports Leader

Reports to: Sports and Rentals Director

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the guidance of the Sports and Rentals Director, the Youth Sports Leader at the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County is responsible for proving support in the organization, delivery, and quality of YMCA program(s) to the membership, program participants and the community. The Youth Sports Leader provides children guidance and supervision in learning, practicing, and performing sports related programs and games. The Youth Sports Leader create a safe atmosphere in which youth interact with one another in a positive, fun and, active environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Organizes participation for various youth sports programs and leagues.
  2. Ensures that programs are executed to meet the needs of all children’s ages, abilities, and skill levels.
  3. Develops a lesson plan for each session emphasizing skills and drills appropriate for the age group.
  4. Greets participants and guardians as they enter/leave area.
  5. Teaches skills and teamwork through a safe, appropriate, and interactive way.
  6. Sets a positive example for players and their families.
  7. Sets up, takes down, and appropriately stores equipment.
  8. Assists in monitoring equipment for maintenance needs and repairs.
  9. Takes attendance and assists with paperwork as needed.
  10. Practices and uphold YMCA core values and policies.
  11. Ensures that YMCA program standards are met and safety procedures followed.
  12. Performs all other duties as assigned.
